. >> my defense was i was trying to save my beloved dogs. >> he was tackled and arrested. >> and a cold weather alert. while we won't see a freeze close in places. the pinpoint weather team is just minutes away. good evening, this is news 6 at 7:00 getting results. i'm julie broughton. >> i'm lisa bell. ginger gadsden is off tonight. the lions move forward with building the team's permanent home. new details on building the stadium downtown and new tax dollars for the city of orlando. we'll have more on that coming up. >> tonight a brevard county man faces charges after he tried to save his own dogs from his burning home. brevard county sheriff's deputies arrested the man after he ignored firefighters' commands to stay out. he talked to news 6 reporter eric sandoval. >> brevard county fire/rescue tells me the fire actually started right here in the living room in a tv. smoke just filled the room.

here, wendall joiner, said he had to keep going in and out trying to rescue his dogs. he felt he had no other choice but to grab a fireman's axe on the ground and smash it through the window to get inside to those dogs. that's when he was tackled on the driveway and arrested. >> my defense was i was trying to save my dogs. >> wendall joiner had only been out of jail about an hour this afternoon when we caught up with him returning to his burned out duplex in cocoa, still battered and bloody. he was here this morning. he says he woke up to fire and smoke. >> i got out of the house, period, and then i realized, oh, wait a minute, my dogs are in there. so i went back in the house to look for my dogs. >> joiner says he was overcome with smoke several times and had to go outside to catch his breath. the last time he says he picked up a fireman's axe off the ground and smashed it through this window to get where he thought the dogs were. that's when brevard county sheriff's deputies say they tackled him to the ground, roughing up his face. deputies say they took joiner to the hospital for a cat scan and

he was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. >> i think at the most he should have took me aside and if he felt that he needed to cuff me and put me in the squad car until things settled. >> i did speak with brevard county sheriff's office late this afternoon. they tell me joiner seemed intoxicated when they got out here to the scene of the fire this morning. they feared what he may have done with that firefighter's axe if he was indeed impaired. they say they did haul him off to jail and charged him with two misdemeanors. they say grabbing that axe could have been a felony. in cocoa tonight, eric sandoval, news 6. >> thank you. the good news is brevard county fire/rescue saved joiner's dogs as he was being taken to jail. tonight joiner, his roommate and three dogs playing with family in palm bay. >> the other big story tonight is the cold weather.

a big change from last night. >> you still need to bundle up. let's get right over to chief meteorologist tom sorrells. >> it's not going to be a walk your dog without the jacket kind of night. come on, it's cold, it's cool for central florida. but anywhere 7 to 8 degrees warmer than last night. still on the nippy side. clear skies are going to usher in the cool air again. we've got another system rolling across the nation's interior which will bring yet another cold front our way. this morning this is what we woke up, to. it was 25 in gainesville, 38 did it for the overnight low in orlando. much because it's calm from west. the on-the-town forecast for hour. come the 11:00 news time, we'll be holding in at 50. i'll be right back to pinpoint overnight lows where you live and talk about the arrival of the next cold front on friday. >> all right, tom. sounds good. meteorologist candace campos is also pinpointing the cold.

woke up to in the northern part of our area. >> let's show them to you as we pinpoint here in orlando. we got a shot of an entire field in the backyard, covered in the frost over the grass. that is actually a beautiful shot. the cat looks nice, too. a bit further to the north over winter springs, this was a pretty cool shot. very creative. it says fla question mark? that's pretty cute. it was set back in 2016. it will be a nice photo to keep and remember. and a bit further to the north in palm coast, we were just there a few days ago. more frost art, i guess you could say. they have the word "frost" written right across the hood of their car basically. >> let's talk about some cooler temperatures, just not cold temperatures as we look and pinpoint silver springs throughout the next couple of hours. for tonight, again, last night you were below freezing and tonight it looks like you'll be staying in the mid to upper 30's.

move into thursday, up to about 69 degrees, not too hot, not too cold, just right, and by thursday night, it looks like the temperatures will be staying in the low 50's. enjoy it before the next cool-down returns as tom's been talking about by the weekend. >> thank you, candace. >> don't forget, you can get breaking weather alerts and live radar anytime on our free news 6 pinpoint weather app. just search wkmg in your app store. >> still breaking at 7:00, we're learning the name of the man killed in an apparent hunting accident. the shooting happened in a wooded area of oak hill in volusia county, north of maytown road and south of new smyrna beach. police say the victim is 65-year-old bruce best. detectives say his friend, 56-year-old lesean sutton accidentally shot best with a .12 gauge shotgun. we'll have an update on how all of this happened at 11:00. >> new information tonight about the vicious mauling that left a

hurt and five dogs shot to death by sanford police. we broke news of the mauling last night at this time on news 6. it happened at the stonebrook apartments. tonight the apartment complex says the five big dogs were, quote, "unauthorized pets," which were not permitted under the terms of the lease. neighbors were surprised. >> i never heard any dogs barking. i came back from running errands and it was chaos here. >> it took two people to carry out each of the five dogs' bodies in trash bags. the sixth dog not part of the attack was taken away by animal services. it's not clear who the dogs belong to. >> a father called 911 saying his son was acting strangely. a short time later, orlando police shot him dead. turns out 28-year-old eric provost was not holding a real gun. >> troy campbell looks at why it can be so hard for officers to tell the difference. >> the orlando police chief says his officers were acting proactively when shooting a man

be an air soft gun. we checked in with experts to see how real the fake guns can look. >> any of these from a distance looks real. nobody knows the difference from a distance. >> anyone buying these bb guns needs to understand a weapon they might see harmless can look like a real firearm to others. >> take this simulated firearm, for example. the semi-automatic bb gun, allows you to shoot 21 pellets from a single cartridge. experts say it looks like the real deal and only set you back about $40 at your local store. >> of the four guns, two are real firearms. the other two, air soft. can you tell the difference? >> the bad side of that is the community has been brought up in the ideals that toy guns, but they look real. >> charles powers is an n.r.a.-certified instructor. he says even from the experts just feet away it's almost impossible to tell the difference from a real gun and a

>> i had a couple of police officers in my class that took a concealed carry class who says they've drawn guns on children with these type of guns because they didn't know if they were real or not. >> orlando police chief john mina says 28-year-old eric provost was holding an air soft gun when he was shot and killed by orlando police on monday evening. his officers, thinking the gun was real. on the box of the air soft guns -- >> police and others may think this is a firearm. >> -- a warning, the weapon might be confused for the real deal. >> so today, you probably have almost every major model of gun that's being manufactured as a real gun being produced as an air soft gun. >> orlando police also say the two officers involved in the cameras. we also asked which type of air soft gun the suspect was holding when he was shot and killed. we were told that information will not be released at this time. headquarters, troy campbell, news 6. >> thank you, troy. testimony resumes tomorrow morning in the trial of a

raping a woman near daytona international speedway. today his accuser took the stand, telling the jury what she says happened nearly two years ago. news 6 reporter loren korn was in court. >> while the woman says she only remembers bits and pieces from that night, she says she's certain that her attacker was inside the courtroom. >> was it rape? >> he was pulling me back towards him, back down, and then i guess i ended up turning over and then he was pulling my pants down. >> or consensual? >> i know he didn't do it. it's just a bunch of b.s. i know he's going to be proven innocent. >> the jury spent the day listening to the woman who says she was high and intoxicated the night the pedi-cab driver, 29-year-old george branard, dragged her in the woods and raped her. >> what was your reaction? >> i was moving and squirming and screaming and trying to get away. >> she said it happened after leaving her boyfriend watching

she says after the attack, she crawled out of the woods and got help from another pedi-cab driver. >> she was crying, and she was screaming, and just out there and it was pretty horrible. it scared the hell out of me when i heard it when i was stopped. >> while the defense has not presented its side yet, they say not only was the sex consensual, but there have been conflicting statements about her injuries and why she left the speedway in the first place, something that branard's father says will be presented soon enough. >> he's not a violent-type person. he's not a rapist. >> testimony picks back up tomorrow morning. if convicted, he could face up to 15 years behind bars. in daytona beach, loren korn, news 6. >> thank you. a $1.5 billion dream is becoming a reality and the first stretch opened today.

>> well, take a look at this. it is a dirty transformation for the citrus bowl. sky 6 flew over the stadium this afternoon for the soccer and football fields have been covered with some 300 truckloads of dirt. this is on purpose. it's all to get the citrus bowl ready for this weekend's monster jam, complete with a monster truck obstacle course.

days. monster jam is expected to draw 60,000 fans saturday night. you should go check it out. >> i've gone out and watched the transformation before and covered it. it's pretty amazing. deal. >> and not far from the citrus bowl an empty field will belong to the orlando city lions. they agreed to buy the land for $18 million, depending on the site survey underway right now. the lions will pay $4 million up year. it will mean millions in new property taxes each year. the city council is expected to approve the deal at its next meeting january 25th. the stadium site takes it to two sites at amway. the lions now hope to start playing there in 2017. if you have a hard time envisioning what this will look like, they launched a 3-d tour of the $155 million stadium on

there it is there. it aims to let season ticket holders see the view of their seat before it's built. and it will also be home to the orlando pride, the new women's soccer team. >> monster jam should go to the construction site right now and not worry about transforming the citrus bowl. >> it's already ready for them. >> the first leg of the wekiva parkway is now open to drivers. >> it will eventually complete a beltway around downtown orlando to help people avoid i-4 traffic. right now, it's small, just a 3-mile stretch from mount plymouth road to state road 46 in lake county is complete. eventually, it will cover 25 miles from the 429 in apopka to i-4 in seminole county near the end of the 417. it will also open up a good chunk of the western part of our area for development. >> since it must cross through the environmentally sensitive

25 is what we wake up to in gainesville and 38 degrees in orlando this morning. daytime high today jumped right back up there. now boosting it from sanford to orlando, saying we actually made 66 between the hours of 64 in leesburg and the villages and 64 in ocala and 65 in cocoa beach. here are the temperatures across the country tonight. in florida, 48 in jacksonville and 61 right now in pensacola. gainesville has already dropped back to 48. 52 in ocala. it's still very strong. 58 in orlando. 58 in cocoa beach and 55 in melbourne. from here, we will drop on down. take a look at how we're doing. compared to last night, we are 11 degrees warmer right now than we were at this same hour. 10 degrees warmer in gainesville. 9 in ocala and 11, 11 degrees warmer in new smyrna beach. wind speeds are all over the

sanford and the northeast at 7 in cocoa beach. satellite and radar tells the story how quickly we got rid of the cloud cover and the sun beamed all day long today. that is going to be the case again tomorrow as well. as a matter of fact, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being awesome, tomorrow's a 10. we're going to be above normal. the winds are not going to be bad. it's going to be primo winter day in central florida. clouds and rain together, not showing much change tomorrow, just a little bit of cloud cover building, but on friday, the frontal zone approaches from the northwest. here's my latest model run. bigger rain on the gulf coast. by 2 or 3:00, it still looks like it runs out of energy the closer it comes to central florida. by 5 p.m., i may be tracking a few little pockets of action, but nothing severe, nothing like what we went through this weekend. overnight lows tonight, 37 in ocala. 45 in leesburg and 43 in daytona beach. my forecast for orlando, clear and cool, an overnight low of 46.
